Reliable, well-supported, premium pricing. Best choice if you want it installed once and forgotten for 18-20 years.
Lennox Premium
Highest efficiency available. iComfort smart integration.
Lennox SL28XCV is the highest-efficiency AC sold in North America (SEER 28). XC25, XC21 are excellent variable-speed options. iComfort thermostat ecosystem is best-in-class for smart integration. Slightly more expensive than Trane but matches efficiency claims in real-world performance.
Carrier Premium
Excellent variable-speed performance. Carrier Infinity is industry standard.
Carrier Infinity 26 (premium) and Performance series (mid-tier). Excellent variable-speed compressor design (Greenspeed Intelligence). Strong dealer network. Slightly more service-friendly than Lennox.
Bryant + American Standard Mid-Tier
Same equipment as Carrier and Trane respectively, lower badge cost.
Bryant is Carrier's sister brand (same equipment, slightly lower price). American Standard is Trane's sister brand (same equipment, slightly lower price). Both are smart value plays if you want premium engineering without the premium badge cost.
Goodman + Amana Best Value
Strongest value choice. 10-year warranty matches premium brands.
Goodman GSXC18, GSX16, GSZC18 series. Strong 10-year parts warranty (matches premium brands). 30-40% lower equipment cost than Trane. Real-world reliability is good (Daikin-owned now). The smart choice if you're cost-conscious or have a rental property.
Rheem, York, Heil, Payne, Ducane Mid-Tier
All decent. Pick based on local parts availability and warranty.
These are all reasonable mid-tier options. Performance is similar to value-tier with mid-tier pricing. Not bad choices if you find a great deal, but rarely the best choice.
Ductless Mini-Split Brands
Mitsubishi Electric Hyper-Heat H2i Premium
Best overall mini-split. 12-year compressor warranty.
Mitsubishi M-Series and P-Series. Hyper-Heat H2i compressor works down to -13°F (overkill for OC but indicates build quality). 12-year compressor warranty. Best low-temp performance, quietest operation, most reliable. Premium price justified.
Daikin Premium
Excellent efficiency. Strong dealer network.
Daikin invented the ductless mini-split. Excellent efficiency, good warranty (12-year compressor). Slightly less premium-feel than Mitsubishi but better dealer support in OC.
Fujitsu Mid-Tier
Great value. Reliable. Best non-premium option.
Fujitsu Halcyon series. Solid build quality, good warranty (10-year compressor), 20-30% cheaper than Mitsubishi. Great value pick.
LG Mid-Tier
Good multi-zone performance. Decent value.
LG Multi V series. Multi-zone designs are well-engineered. Slightly less reliable than Mitsubishi/Daikin in our experience but warranty support is solid.
Mr. Cool Best Value
DIY-friendly. Lowest cost.
Mr. Cool DIY series is genuinely homeowner-installable (pre-charged lines). Pro series is for contractor installs. Lowest cost. Reliability is okay but build quality is below premium brands. Good for additions, garages, ADUs where premium isn't justified.

Best charger if you own a Tesla. Universal adds J1772 for non-Tesla EVs.

Electrical Panel Brands
Square D QO Premium
Best overall residential panel. QO breakers are easy to find.
The premium tier of Square D. QO breakers (orange handles) are widely available at any hardware store. Excellent build quality. Used in most premium new construction in OC.
Square D Homeline Mid-Tier
Same company, value version. Most common in OC.
Homeline breakers (gray handles) are the value tier from Square D. Slightly cheaper than QO. Most-installed brand in OC residential. Perfectly fine quality.
Eaton BR / CH Premium
Excellent quality. Slightly cheaper than Square D QO.
Eaton CH is the premium tier (similar to Square D QO). Eaton BR is the value tier (similar to Homeline). Either is a fine choice.
Siemens Q / QP Mid-Tier
Good quality. Common in older OC homes.
Q is value tier, QP is premium. Common in 1980s-90s OC construction. Breakers slightly harder to find than Square D but still widely available.
Federal Pacific (FPE Stab-Lok) - documented to fail to trip during faults, fire risk, most insurance carriers won't insure homes with them.
Zinsco / Sylvania-Zinsco / GTE-Sylvania - same failure modes as FPE.
Challenger - similar issues, recalled.
Pushmatic / Bulldog - obsolete, no parts available.
If your home has any of these, plan a replacement immediately. 200A swap runs $1,800-$4,500.
