- Bond status
- Workers' compensation coverage status
- Any disciplinary actions or complaints
Why License Verification Matters
Hiring an unlicensed contractor in California is a serious risk:
- Insurance: Most homeowners insurance policies are void if work is performed by an unlicensed contractor.
- Permits: Cities only issue permits to licensed contractors for HVAC and electrical work. Without a permit, your work may need to be torn out and redone when you sell.
- Liability: If an unlicensed contractor is injured on your property, you may be personally liable (workers' comp doesn't cover them).
- Quality: Unlicensed contractors haven't passed state competency exams. Higher risk of code violations, safety issues, and shoddy work.
- Recourse: CSLB provides dispute resolution and disciplinary processes for licensed contractors. With unlicensed contractors, your only recourse is small claims court.
California has very high fines for unlicensed contracting on any job over $500 - up to $5,000 fine and 6 months in jail for repeat offenders. If a contractor refuses to provide their license number, walk away.
